Attack on Titan, namely the shōnen manga by Hajime Isayama

Shōnen manga are comic books originally intended for young Japanese boys. Over the years, these comics have opened up to other types of audiences. There are even versions of Shōnen manga that are not of Japanese origin but which respect the original editorial lines. Attack on Titan or Singeki no Kyojin is one of these very famous Japanese comics. It is written by Hajime Isayama. Its first publication was in September 2009 and it was followed by 33 volumes released in 2021.

The story

Attack on Titan is a story that took place in 845 in the Shiganshina district. Eren, son of Grisha Jäger, held the key to their basement in which there were important secrets. With his adoptive sister Mikasa, Eren saw 60-meter Titans appear. No longer having time to see the underground secrets that his father confided to him, Eren witnessed the carnage that the Titans made on his city. They even killed his mother before his eyes. He then decided to take revenge.

An army made up of young graduates of the 104th Brigade underwent training for several years to prepare for the confrontation with the Titans. In the battle, Eren was also devoured by one of the Titans. Armin, his best friend, witnessed this murder. He told Mikasa everything. She went wild and killed several Titans then ran out of propulsion gas and fell to the ground facing a Titan who is none other than Eren, transformed. The latter, considered an adversary by others, managed to help the soldiers. But he is still dragged to justice because he was considered a threat to humanity.

Over time, the sources of Eren’s ability and transformation were discovered. They also discovered where the Titans came from. It was also at this point that they had to think about the decisions he must make for the future of humanity and his loved ones.

Other information to know about this manga

Its author Isayama Hajime began writing and drawing Singeki no Kyojin in high school. In Japan, several manga contests are organized by local weekly magazines. The author therefore tried his luck by submitting his manga to these magazines.

The short version of the story ended up winning an award at the MGP organized by Kodansha who transformed it into a one-shot. It then appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump. It is one of the most popular magazines in Japan. It has already published Naruto, One Piece and Dragon Ball.

Shueisha asked the author to make changes to his story, but he refused and approached Kodansha for a serialization. The latter’s publisher took the opportunity to promote its new magazine called Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009. Since then, the story of Attack on Titan has become a kind of phenomenon in Japan. It has also become known all over the world.
